Synergy has built an excellent reputation for delivering theatre-based activity within the prison estate, from offering practical opportunities for participants to learn how to write a play from scratch or develop acting skills on a 10-week course to devising bespoke projects and creating full-scale theatre productions for prison and invited public audiences. Engagement has consistently resulted in increased confidence and self-esteem, skills development, increased employability, new aspirations and strengthened resolve not to re-offend. Alongside delivery in person, we have also developed digital resources and distance learning provision.
We offer free introductory courses to people with lived experience of the criminal justice system in acting, playwriting, film making, film production, stage management and drama workshop facilitation with opportunity to develop some of these new skills at the next level and put them to the test in a real-life working environment.
Courses and projects are delivered by industry professionals and in collaboration with longstanding partners including Morley College, Royal Court and Soho Theatres and Sara Putt Associates to develop specific creative and transferrable skills and equip participants for further training, work experience and employment on Synergy’s own programmes, those of partners and the wider arts and culture industry. Recent examples include training and work with NFTS, RADA, Royal Court, National and Soho Theatres, Paines Plough, Sara Putt Associates, Amazon, BBC, Green Door Pictures, ITV, Netflix, Sky One, STV and The Farm Group.
