Case studies

Amir, a prisoner at HMP Latchmere House, played the lead in Synergy's production of On the Waterfront in November 2005. He was subsequently signed by a professional theatrical agent, is currently attending auditions and acting classes, and plans to further develop his acting career upon release.

Mark served a sentence at HMP Wandsworth before being employed as stage manager on Synergy's production of Burn soon after his release. He was accepted on a Media and Communications Degree at Goldsmiths University where he is completing his final year. He continues to work with Synergy on a range of projects.

Duewaine has been involved in three Synergy projects although, as a repeat offender, he has only completed one of these. However, he has progressed by remaining out of prison for longer periods, not relapsing into drug abuse and developing a stronger resolve to break the cycle. He has remained in regular contact with Synergy, regarding it as a constant and stable support mechanism. He is currently working with the company on a film script about issues facing prisoners on release.

"Few will become actors but Amir has the natural talent to make a career in theatre."
