Julius Caesar

Shakespeare's tragic story of ambition, conspiracy and power, focusing on the tension between events beyond human control, and those which can be controlled, had powerful connections for the cast existing in a system which had taken away the majority of their choices.

Julius Caesar, guest directed by Charlotte Gwinner, involved a cast and crew of twenty prisoners from HMP Wandsworth. The prison is a closed Victorian establishment currently holding 1,400 prisoners and is one of the largest in Western Europe.

The production was performed during June 2002 at HMP Wandsworth to audiences of prisoners and an invited public, including the cast's families and friends.
